Here at The Costumer, we felt the same heartache as our customers during March of 2020 when shutdowns began. Spring musical theatre season is typically the busiest time of the year for us at The Costumer, as we race to get productions’ rental costumes and accessories out the door and shipped out all across the country. As we hustle and bustle, we make sure that every single costume for every actor, no matter what age or size, is pressed, altered, and accessorized to perfection. This past spring however, our typical commotion was stopped in almost an instant. Theatres across the country went dark as state and local shutdown orders were imposed in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. According to the Educational Theatre Association’s August survey, “The Impact of COVID-19 on Theatre Education,” 91% of schools had to cancel their performances in spring of 2020. Such a large number of cancellations is sobering to say the least. As lovers of scholastic theatre who understand the massive physical, mental, and emotional investment required to put up a show, we here at The Costumer were just as heartbroken as our fellow directors and cast members across the country.

Many theatres were hopeful at the start of the pandemic that in person performances were still possible. A number of theatres in multiple states rescheduled their performances with the hopes that the pandemic would abate quickly. However, performances rescheduled to a few weeks away from the original opening night soon turned into months, and ultimately outright cancellations in some cases. As lockdown measures began being enforced in New York State, The Costumer had to turn off our sewing machines, shut the lights, and close our doors until restrictions were lifted.

<img alt="Our machines are silent, our chairs are empty but our phone lines are opeon. As most of us theatre makers are well aware, it is very hard to break a theatre artist’s spirit which was well on display as creative people across the country hit the ground running in developing new and innovative ways to adapt theatre to our new normal. Scholastic and professional theatres throughout the United States created methods to produce theatre through socially distanced and virtual formats, thus allowing theatre to continue to live on and keep people connected through art during this new age.

While individual theatre groups developed new methods to produce their shows, theatre licensing agencies have adapted their practices as well. Theatre licensing agencies are perhaps one of the most significant driving forces in the industry that dictate how theatre can be produced. Since the onset of the pandemic and the shuttering of live performances, agencies such as Music Theatre International (MTI) and Theatrical Rights Worldwide (TRW) have provided theatre companies with cutting edge new tools to produce theatre in socially distant and safe manners. Through a hosting partnership between ShowTix4U, MTI and Broadway Media, MTI now provides licensing and a comprehensive platform for theatres to capture and stream live musicals and performances, sell tickets to streaming events, and have royalties paid automatically through one unified online platform. MTI has developed a large catalog of shows that are available for streaming rights, and such shows will be permitted to stream until in person live theatre is made safe again.

TRW has also similarly partnered with virtual platforms in order to provide streaming rights to their entire catalog of shows. TRW has authorized that their shows can be streamed and ticketed via BookTix Live. Much like MTI’s streaming platform, BookTix Live allows theatre companies to provide live stream ticketing for their productions, granting audience members individual exclusive access to live performances of TRW musicals from any location. While nothing can compare to the atmosphere of sitting in a theatre and watching a live performance, live streams of shows provided by platforms such as BookTix allow for friends and family of cast and crewmembers to easily watch performances by their loved ones. Another benefit of live streamed theatre is that friends and family who may not have been able to travel to a theatre venue under normal circumstances can now watch performances from home.

In addition to providing streaming services that allow the show to go on in a safe and socially distanced manner, licensing agencies like MTI have also expanded upon licensing for Junior productions. Broadway Junior musicals were launched in 1996 by MTI chairman, Freddie Gershon, and are licensed productions that are designed by educators to suit the needs and attention spans of younger casts and audiences. These adapted musicals are condensed, author-approved versions of their Broadway counterparts, including classic Broadway hits like Guys and Dolls and Into The Woods, as well as Disney productions like Beauty and the Beast and Frozen. The music for these junior productions are written in adjusted keys and styles for young and developing voices. Further, all shows have flexible cast sizes to fit any scholastic ensemble, no matter how big or small. Such Junior productions have been made more accessible to scholastic ensembles since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and translate well into an online format through their flexible structure and style. MTI has made many of their Junior show licenses available for streaming and continue to add to its ever-growing list of titles.

While licensing and ticketing agencies have made strides in adapting to our new forms of distanced theatre, how has The Costumer helped facilitate theatre groups’ transition to virtual and distanced theatre? Throughout the past year, The Costumer overhauled a wide variety of our operations in order to accommodate the needs of our customers and our collective “new normal.” One of the hallmarks of The Costumer’s service philosophy throughout our past 100-plus years of business has been flexibility, and the pandemic has been no exception. For productions that are being filmed, we now allow for costume shipments to be split to sync with filming schedules, thus permitting specific costumes to arrive to our customers just in time for when they are needed for a shoot. Due to many productions featuring smaller casts, The Costumer has also waived the minimum rental costume order requirement for some of our higher demand shows in certain instances, like Beauty and the Beast. The Costumer is also continuing to offer a mix of sale items and costumes to compliment rental orders. We are adept at working with customers to maximize the budgets and deal with any constraints. Whether your company needs individual props for actors to reduce sharing and adhere to sanitation guidelines, or simply needs a little something extra to spice up your rental order, The Costumer is always ready to serve.

Along with our increased flexibility to meet our customer needs, The Costumer consistently works to follow all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We adhere to strict social distancing and masking rules in order to protect our employees and our customers. Every team member that handles your order has their temperature taken at the start of each shift and is screened for COVID-19 risks every day. Additionally, both of our brick-and-mortar locations are thoroughly sanitized and disinfected daily by our staff. We have also adjusted the floorplans at each of our stores to accommodate for social distancing, such as widening our aisles and making certain foot traffic patterns one way only. In addition, all dance shoes and costumes that are tried on by customers at our locations are removed from circulation for a quarantine period and are disinfected before being put back on the sales floor. The health and safety of our customers and our team members is paramount, and here at The Costumer, we hold ourselves to the highest standard when working to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

With new practices and procedures in place to stop the spread of COVID-19, we have been able to safely support our customers as they tackle theatrical productions during this unprecedented time. Along the way, we have witnessed a number of these new theatre formats firsthand. Virtual productions MTI and TRW’s licensing and ticketing platforms have become popular, and scholastic and professional ensembles have utilized other tools such as Zoom and OBS to create innovative virtual productions as well. Between the onset of the pandemic and February 2021, well over 80% of the customers we have supported employed virtual or hybrid performance formats. While some of these new and emerging forms of theatre may be daunting to scholastic theatre groups, The Costumer has a vast wealth of knowledge and experience in dealing with unconventional production methods through our long history with film and television productions.

We have even begun to see firsthand how some of our loyal customers have adapted to our new normal. Guilderland High School drama director, Andy Maycock, had to overcome many of the same challenges faced by theatre groups all across the country when producing his spring musical. After having to cancel their previously planned musical, Chicago, in 11th hour last spring, Andy decided to produce a socially distanced production of Little Women this spring. Andy explains that he chose Little Women for a number of reasons: “First, because of its smaller cast size. We went with a cast of 25 this year – compared to our usual 45 or 50 – because we knew that with distancing, it was going to be tough to get lots of kids onstage at the same time.” Andy also states that MTI’s adjustments to their licensing agreements gave his theatre group the opportunity to film their production, upload the recording to ShowTix, and charge admission per viewing. Additionally, Andy explains that the “show also had very few dancing moments, so we were glad that we wouldn’t have kids working too hard in the ‘physical activity department.’” In terms of costuming, The Costumer has gladly partnered with Andy and his school’s production needs through staggered costume rental deliveries that match the production’s shooting calendar. After all, The Costumer has been proud to play a part in Guilderland’s productions since 1989 – a total of 36 shows! In this virtual model, all costumes are pulled and put together at the same time to ensure a cohesive look. The delivery schedule then gets set according to what is needed for each filming day, thus every actor has a clean costume that drops them into their character on the day of their shoot. Andy and his team have also found creative ways to record their actors sing and act in a safe and socially distanced manner, and with lots of hard work, planning, and fabulous rental costumes from The Costumer, all signs point to Guilderland High School’s production of Little Women being a success.

Guilderland High School’s Little Women

Virtual or recording methods for productions like Guilderland High School’s Little Women may endure even after audiences and casts can gather in the theatre again safely. Streaming platforms may persist so that relatives of cast members can tune in to watch their loved ones perform from any part of the country or the world. Virtual productions may have longevity for theatre groups that seek to draw in performers from across the country, thus allowing actors and theatre creators to connect and work on a project from wherever they are. While almost nothing compares to the atmosphere and spectacle of live theatre, adding virtual options and live streaming make theatre more accessible to all.

No matter the format, size of ensemble, type of production, pandemic or normal times, The Costumer will always be there for wherever and however theatre is performed. We have served our local community and theatres across the country for over 100 years, and in that time, we have witnessed just how powerful the performing arts are, and how resilient and innovative the theatre community is. Oscar Wilde once said, “I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” Even during these trying times, theatre allows us to connect with one another, and share a common sense of humanity, whether it is in person or through a computer screen. Until the day when we can all gather together once again, share the art that we love with one another, and rejoice in performance that brings us closer to one another, The Costumer will continue to be there for you. The stories that we tell onstage will forever and always come first, and we will be there to help you tell yours.

It takes a long time and a crystal ball to decide what is going to be hot for Halloween and what you are going to buy to put in your stores. This is the first step and it all begins in January at the Halloween Show which The Costumer goes to every year to prepare for the big day. We decided this year that Frozen was going to be very popular so we have put them on our website in anticipation of them coming in and being a big seller.
Olaf seems to be becoming the biggest seller this year so far. Olaf can be pre ordered here. It is definitely the funniest Character in the Frozen Movie.
We can't always go with the cutesy Disney costumes we always find new and fresh items for our grown up shoppers as well. This year we chose Zagone studios which manufactures pretty creepy licensed masks. They are very well made and Zagone is becoming just as popular as Don Post was. Goat Boy is just a great new mask and only one of many that The Costumer will be carrying this year.
Try Some Theatrical Makeup And Setting Powders

Are you looking for a dramatic change for the holidays or just a way to keep your makeup up fresh? If makeup is what you're looking for, why not head out to The Costumer and check out their full line of theatrical makeup and accessories? They have everything from sparkle and sequined eyelashes, to brush in hair color and setting powders. You've probably been looking for many of these products but haven't a clue where to buy them. I felt the same way until I went to The Costumer. There I got expert advice on their stage makeup and what to use. Of course, they're noted for wigs and costumes, you may not have thought about them for what I call, “professional makeup tools.”

If you’re like me, but by the end of the day, your makeup has pretty much disappeared. It doesn’t matter whether I use expensive or cheap makeup; I’ve tried them all. I decided to check out the Costumer and they recommended a product called Barrier Spray. Barrier Spray is just what the name implies; use it as a barrier between your face and the makeup and a barrier to the outside world. The product, from Mehron, suggests that you spray it on your face to “set” your makeup. It can also be used as a base for your foundation to prevent it from being absorbed by your pores. It should be applied after your makeup where it acts as a setting agent. It works.

I’ve ever found anything like this product that really works. Instead of looking washed out at the end of the day, I still have most of the makeup, on my face! Another bonus is the makeup is not on my clothes or someone else’s. This product isn't fool proof but it sure beats anything that I know of.

I know we’ve written about it before, but if you’ve never taken advantage the brand, Ben Nye carried by The Costumer you’re missing out. Ben Nye makes theatrical makeup it’s meant to cover up or highlight and do it well. The makeup is made to stay on and look good under glaring lights. The colors are bold and highly pigmented; if this is what you want, everyday makeup doesn’t work.

Maybe you're not sure what color concealer you need. Check out the Ben Nye contour wheel with several colors you can blend to match your skin tone. If you tan in the summer, it’s likely you need a different color. If the shade is not on there, you can blend the colors together until you come up with the blend. Another plus is the prices are very competitive if not downright cheap.

Ben Nye also makes a cover for blemishes and bruises that work. I had some blemishes removed from my face and found the dermatologist didn't have any kind of cover up. One trip to The Costumer and it was all taken care of. Remember we're talking about stage makeup. They also have tattoo cover-ups in case you want to downplay your art work. All the colors are vibrant, good quality and provide amazing cover-up. Compared to department store prices, they are amazingly inexpensive. Several months ago, I wrote about the markup after finding out that a number of Ben Nye products are used by Kim Kardashian. If you want to learn more about face contouring and how to use many of the Ben Nye products, check out this video, http://tune.pk/video/1583931/How-To-Do-Kim-Kardashian-Face-Slimming-And-Contouring-Make-Up-Make-Me-Up-S01E38.

If you love red like I do, then this is the party for you. You can serve lots of red types of punch including tomato juice. You can make blood-red gelatin and use crazy Halloween shaped cutouts for molds.

If you want vampire music, consider “Cry Little Sister” from the Lost Boys soundtrack and “Vampires “by the Pet Shop Boys.

Vampires have also been considered beautiful as well as dangerous and immortal. They have always been intriguing to humans. They have taken their place in history as one of our cultural obsessions.

Need some party games? How about having a Jell-O race? Each person wears their vampire teeth and must finish their dish of Jell-O without using their hands. You can also put a red cherry in the bottom of the Jell-O. The winner is the first one to eat all the Jell-O and pick up the cherry with their vampire teeth.

Although not a vampire game, you can host a murder-mystery party and have everyone dress as vampires.

Every game you play is best played with vampire teeth. Bobbing for (Adams) Apples in a bowl of blood of will definitely be worth taking photos of.

Vampires also like the Death Stare Game. Everyone gets in a circle with their arms around other’s shoulders. . Everyone puts their heads down and then looks up into someone’s eyes.. If two people find they are looking at each other they scream and fall over.

You can also play “Vampire Murder Mystery” similar to “Clue” so you can figure out who the vampire is. I don’t know about “Pin the Tail on the Vampire.”

This is easy, capes, vests and fangs; everyone has to have fangs. Consider long white dresses, black trousers, and long capes.. The Costumer has lots of outfits to make your vampire outfit complete.

Decorating for a vampire party is also easy. Cut out vampires and put them over the windows and on the walls. You will need lots of bats and coffins. All of these things are available at the Costumer. Of course, you will need the Halloween sound effects. Use lots of red and purple colors with hints of black.

Halloween is the most loved holiday of the year. We get to wear the most ridiculous outfits and paint on scary faces. I know there are people who don’t like getting dressed up in costume, but I don’t understand it. I love when people go all out with their outfits, and I personally love getting dressed up. One of the best parts is all the makeup you get to wear! The costumes are so magnificent. You can become almost anyone.

Most of us can remember going out to “trick or treat” and get all of that wonderful candy. I went out ‘trick or treating’ with several of my friends a few years ago, and I really loved all the candy. As a kid, candy was something that ‘wasn’t good for your teeth,' and that was that! So we had to give all the candy away. I don’t want you to think my mom was heartless; I did get some candy.

This is an opportunity to give your children a special treat. Bring them to The Costumer so they can see all the wonderful costumes and let them pick something special. You can take plenty of photos while they try on wigs and costumes. There are plenty of things for them to try on and realize their fantasies. What could be more fun? This is something they will remember forever.

Who should you take trick or treating beside your children? What about dressing up your dog and taking him along? The dog may or may not appreciate a costume, but you never know. My thought is your dog might enjoy wearing bunny ears for one night. If your dog isn’t interested in going out to “trick or treat,” how about making the dog part of the party at home? If you have a party at home, you won't have to worry about the candy that you get from strangers. There are lots of fun and spooky things you can do this Halloween other than Trick or Treating. So after you've had your fill of candy plan on spending the rest of your night getting really, really scared!

How about decorating your car like The Costumer car?

Want some scary things to do on Halloween? How about visiting a cemetery? You can have someone hiding behind a tombstone ready to jump out when you arrive. This might even be a good adult prank. You can also rent some Gothic Tomb Stones and create your own cemetery.

There are plenty of good horror movies to rent. Check with The Costumer for horror movies. The library might have someDVD’s you could check out . I’m sure the kids would love looking for horror movies. No doubt there will be a horror movie playing at one of the local theaters. The kids will probably love going to the movies.

I read somewhere about sleeping in the attic. I think this sounds like great fun. You can also decorate the attic with cobwebs if you don’t have your own. When I was a kid, my mom let my sister and I cover the living room furniture with sheets and blankets. She would play Halloween music and read scary Halloween stories. I can still remember how scary it was but it was also so much fun. My mother was a great story teller. She knew the best stories to read and other times she made them up.

Check out your town and see if there is a haunted house you can visit. If the weather wasn’t cold, my grandfather used to plan a hay ride for my all my friends. Bowman’s Orchard http://www.bowmanorchards.com/farm-orchard/kids-corner/ has a kid’s corner, with lots of fun things to do. Bauman’s Orchard is located in Rexford,New York.
If you haven’t made Halloween a special event, why not make it one? The kids will love it and you will have fun doing it. Don’t forget to get dressed up.The Costumerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06388183721876899987noreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022624674898905522.post-91073269813647827812013-08-22T12:41:00.000-04:002015-07-16T14:42:39.170-04:00Labor Day End of the Summer Bash Costume IdeasSeptember 2, is Labor Day, marking the official end of the summer. Many people will be spending their last few days away at the beach, and others will be home getting ready for school. The first Labor Day was created by the Central Labor Union to create a holiday for workers. In 1894, it became a federal holiday. If you’re at home why not celebrate with a costume party before the summer actually ends. A costume party would be fun since most people don’t think of this day as a time to dress up, and it’s a good time to celebrate the ‘almost end of summer.’ Do you remember when you couldn’t wear white after Labor Day? I still have trouble with white shoes in the winter, I feel like a nurse going to work, but I love white jeans. Nurses aren’t required to wear white shoes anymore either.

In my mind, Labor Day reminds me of the song, YMCA by the Village People.

If you haven’t seen or heard it, here’s a link to a YouTube video!

Since Labor Day is all about work and jobs, how about asking people to dress up as their favorite profession.

Consider the following costumes: a fireman, Indian maiden and a presidential costume to name a few. The Costumer has plenty of hats and headdresses; the Obama mask is also available.

What to serve?

How about rolling ice cream pops and rolling them into red, white and blue candies? The usual fare of hamburgers and hot dogs are good. Just add some red, white and blue decorations. You can also have a patriotic theme.

How’s this for an invitation?

Is a Luau More Your Speed?

Okay, maybe this is too tame for you so plan a Luau.

The costumes are simple. Grass skirts for everyone.

If it’s really hot, everyone will love this including the men. You can say good-bye to summer with a relaxing luau. You can get Tiki torches and other decorations, serve drinks with pineapple and peach wedges and give out grass skirts to your guests. The Costumer has plenty of grass skirts.

There are lots of barbecue recipes but what do you do for your vegetarian guests? Here is a link to a vegetarian feast. http://www.caryn.com/links/garden/recipes/BBQ/vegetarian_lau_lau_luau_appetizer.html

Are you interested in some games? One of the traditional ones is a hula hoop contest. Whoever can hoop the longest gets a prize. This is fun for adults as well as little girls.

This is also the time to resurrect the limbo.

Limbo contest is a fun game and will bring back memories for lots of people. You may have to warn people that you are not responsible for hurt backs. You start with the bar high and then see who can limbo under the lowest bar.

There is another game that is played inHawaii. It’s called stones and is similar to horseshoes. Everyone picks up a stone and tries to get it closest to the stick or post that you’ve put in the ground. If you hit the target, you automatically win. Or, you could just play horseshoes.

Why not dust off your patio and fire up the barbecue one more time and send out the summer in grand style. The Costumerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06388183721876899987noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022624674898905522.post-27122352364418904582013-08-19T12:25:00.000-04:002015-07-16T14:42:43.794-04:00National Kiss and Make Up Day and Costumes

Whoever heard of National Kiss and Make Up day? If you haven’t, August 26th is the day. What a great way to make up with an old love. We’ve all had fights and arguments with someone especially if you have lots of relatives. This is a perfect way to end an ongoing feud. If you’ve been thinking of making up with someone, August 26th is the day. What a fun day this can be. By the way, the gladiola is the flower of the day. Remember making up can be lots of fun.

Did we tell you that August is also National Romance Month?

August would be a perfect month for a period wedding or any kind of wedding. I think a Roman Wedding would be good fun.

How about this Roman costume?

The Roman marriages were arranged and of course the bride came with a dowry and the contract sealed with a kiss. The dowry was anything the family could afford, sometimes it included slaves. Once the dowry was brought to the groom, it became his property. The rings were considered and important part of the wedding. At the engagement party, the ring was given to the bride by the bridegroom and the wedding was formerly announced.

Rings in ancient Roman culture were an important part of preparations for a wedding. The formal contract, publicly acknowledged at the engagement party, was marked by the giving of a ring by the groom to his bride-to-be.

Engagement ring tradition has developed since ancient times, yet Italian culture today still embraces many of the customs of Roman culture. I recently read the Romans invented the tradition of the engagement ring.

Wives held a high position in ancient Rome. Italian men took little part in the planning of the day; just as today’s weddings, the majority of the planning is left to the wife-to-be.

Italian men in modern wedding preparations may take a more active part in the wedding planning process.

Bridesmaids were also an important part of the wedding as they are today. Being invited to the wedding was considered a great honor and duty. If you turned down an invitation it was considered an insult to the families.

As the wedding day closed and turned to darkness, it was the matron of honor was to literally ‘rip’ the bride from her mother and the guests would throw walnuts at the couple. Walnuts are considered to be sign of fertility. The bride was to leave her parent’s house and walk to her new home to meet her husband. The groom was to carry the bride over the threshold and hopefully not trip. Tripping was considered very bad luck for the couple.

On the morning of the wedding the bride was dressed by her mother and had the ‘knot of Hercules’ (belt) tied around her waist. Hercules was considered the bride’s guardian and only her husband could remove the belt.
This veil was over her wedding dress which was covered with a wreath of flowers. The Romans borrowed the custom for their brides and sometimes decorated with metallic threads. Remember red is considered the color of love.

The bride entered the house she would again tell her husband that should be obedient. The matron of honor helped undress the bride and offer her to the bride’s husband

The Roman wedding was considered a great expenditure. The average couple in the U.S. is said to spend between $17,000 to $27,000 on their wedding. It sure does sound like a good business to be in, doesn’t it?
Washington Park Playhouse, (Albany,New York) kicks off its 25th Anniversary Season with Monty Python’s Spamalot. I have never seen it, some say it’s hilarious and others say they don’t know what all the noise is about. I hear the costumes are wonderful, the cast is talented, and you get to sit outside and watch theater. What could be bad about that? Having been to many shows at the park, I’ve never seen a bad one.

If you’re really brave, you can produce Spamalot in your own backyard. If you’re interested or want to hear the music, we have provided a link.

According to Wikipedia, Monty Python’s Spamalot is a musical comedy “lovingly ripped off from” the 1975 Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the film, it is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian Legend, but it differs from the film in many ways.
We have our own Cruella de Vil, the creepy antagonist from the 1961 animated film adaptation One Hundred and One Dalmatians, and Disney's live-action film adaptations. I’m thinking she's a mean lady. Who would kidnap Dalmatian puppies for a fur coat? Check out the “fake” coat that we just got in.

The Costumer has moved on to creating costumes for Shrek. Shrek is about an ogre whose solitude has been invaded by a bunch of annoying fairytale characters who were sent away from their kingdom by his evilness Lord Farquaad. Shrek tries to cut a deal and rescue Princess, who is about to marry Farquaad. The plot thickens after that.

How about a Princess Fiona wig? We've got those at The Costumer and are working on costumes for Halloween.

Speaking of Halloween, what are you wearing this year? You know it’s not too early to think about it, in fact, the earlier the better. You know there’s nothing worse than wondering what you’re going to wear two days before the Halloween party.

Disney costumers are really cute for kids. I love this ballerina outfit.

Would you consider being Batman? This is definitely one of the best costumes for a guy.

How about a Fantasy Theme Party for Adults?

I’ve noticed that people complain about having to dress in costume for parties, but they love the photos.

How do you get people to dress up? You first have to know your guests. If you have a crazy bunch of friends who are willing to participate, this will be a party that will never be forgotten. Planning a backyard barbecue can be more fun if everyone comes in costume. Consider an old-time beach party with bathing suits and dressing in clothing from the 20’s. You can connect this with a Great Gatsby party. Rent the Great Gatsby movie and then decide what you would like your friends to wear. Why not take over the movie roles and assign them to your friends? You can also give them some of the lines to memorize, and you’re off to a wonderful evening; creating your own movie in your backyard.
There are more dance wear and ballet shoes for children and adults.

Even if you’re not a dancer, I think that wrap around skirts worn with tights are wonderful. They are always in fashion and are great for throwing in your suitcase. I probably shouldn’t mention leg warmers but when you need them; they may not be available.

I’m not sure if I want to be a ballet dancer, but I’ve always been enthralled with leg warmers. In addition, there is clothing for ballroom and modern dance.
Summer is the start of the Saratoga Ballet.
Did you know the first ballet school was opened in France in 1661 by Louis the XXIV and only for male dancers? The initial ballet was performed in Italy in the 1600s. Women started dancing in 1681 wearing long dresses. Until 1789, performers danced, recited poems and sang songs.

Are you interested in ballet movies? If you would like a dark ballet movie, then the Black Swan (2010) is not to be missed. Black Swan allows you into Nina’s life as a ballerina in the New York City Ballet. Like all great artists, she is consumed by her profession and her competitors. Her mother is a retired ballerina who supports her daughter’s love for the ballet. Nina is auditioning for Swan Lake, and it requires a dancer who can play both the white (innocent) and black (evil) swan. What make the movie are the psychological twists and turns of women competing for this coveted role.

If you’re looking for the classic ballet films watch The Red Shoes (1948). This is another dark ballet film about the power of the red shoes.
We are so lucky to be near Saratoga, New York, the summer home of the New York City Ballet. . If you missed the earlier NYCB program, there is still time to see the Aspen Sante Fe this coming week starting on Wednesday July 24, 2013 ( http://www.spac.org/events/dance/aspen-santa-fe-ballet). The Sante Fe School of Ballet is a well-known Folklorico program. (The Folklorico program is composed of Ballet steps and musical pieces reflecting various regions and folk music genres of Mexico. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballet_Folklorico_de_Mexico) Throughout the beginning years, until 1789, the performers not only danced, but also recited poems and sang songs.

And possibly get to the Saratoga Ballet, it will be a night to remember.
Ballet dancers go through ballet shoes very quickly depending on their dancing experience, and time spent dancing. A pair of pointe shoes will last anywhere from a few hours up to 12 hours of dancing. If you attend a class for a few hours, it’s said the shoes will last approximately three months. The cost of pointe shoes varies from sixty dollars to one hundred thirty dollars. Most non-professional dancers go through a pair of shoes every three months.

Even if you’ve never been to a ballet you’re sure to enjoy and marvel at the beauty of the dancers. Consider that it takes years of training to become an established dancer and an honor to dance with these internationally known groups.

When we first started talking about Jabbawockeez I didn’t know what it was, and I couldn’t say it. I was told it had something to do with white masks, so I went out to do some exploring.

In 2003, there were a group of friends who wanted to show off their dancing skills. Each member of the group came with a different dance background and a variety of styles. They danced together and started a style called Jabbawockeez. The mission of the Jabbzwockeez was to inspire the world with their music and dance.

The idea of the Jabbawockee is the brainchild of Joseph Larot, Kevin Brewer and Phil Tayag also known as 3 Musky but the crew consisted of five other members who collaborated and created the "style" of the Jabbawockeez.

By the way,“Jabberwocky" is a poem of nonsense verse written by Lewis Carroll, originally featured in Alice in Wonderland. Apparently the words have been around a long time; they just keep getting changed and getting new meanings. Did Jabbawockeez come from Jabberwocky? Who’s to know?

The group actually became famous on America’s Got Talent, won $100,00 and went on to tour with American’s Best Dance Crew. The above photo is the Jabbawockeez performing in their show called “Prism” at the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas.

A year in the making, the Luxor Hotel created an 840 seat Jabbawocke theater for the group. The theater features top-of-the-line acoustics complementing the musical artistry of the show. The dance has changed the way people see dance around the world. The identical white, expressionless masks allow the audience to visualize and understand the music through the Jabbawockeez music and their dance. Their moves are intricate and unusual,

According to Wikipedia, The mask and glove motif was adopted as a tribute to the 1970's San Francisco strutting crew Medea Sirkas. Gary "Gee One" Kendall and Randy "DJ Wish One Bernal were both members of the MindTricks dance crew which were active in the SanFranscico Bay Area. The reason for the white masks, to make everyone look like one. When they perform, the idea is for everyone as a whole not individuals.

Yes, the group started a whole new dance trend and a way to look. It never ceases to amaze me how clever people can be.

Want to do your own Jabbawockeez?

Of course, you can get the white masks and the white gloves at The Costumer and decorate them anyway you like.

If you want to be true to the Jabbawockeez, everyone will have to wear the same color masks and gloves. It’s now beginning to remind me of the Harlem Shake. Everyone looks like they’re just existing and then the lead dancer starts in, and everyone follows. Suppose everyone were to put on their purple masks? How cute would that be?

Now I'm wondering about the Blue Men? Were they really the first Jabbawockeez only wearing blue masks? If you’ve never seen them, you are missing out.. The blue masks aren’t distracting; they allow you to create your own reality as you watch them dance and play their musical instruments. It allows you to fanaticize about the group. I would assume that’s the same feeling you get with the Jabbawockeez.

So why not a party with everyone wearing similar masks, you paint the white masks to look alike or you leave them all white? Maybe for Halloween everyone can go out in black leotards and wear white masks.

Maybe a wedding is a little too crazy? A prom would be cool. How about just a fun party and everyone dancing to the Jabbawockeez music? The possibilities are endless. The Costumerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06388183721876899987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022624674898905522.post-27677198728678654252013-06-17T11:34:00.000-04:002015-07-16T11:42:04.049-04:00Clowning Around at The CostumerWhat do you think of when you think of summer? Does your summer include swimming and vacationing or a trip to one of our state fairs? Would you be interested in some ‘clowning around?’

We love clowns at The Costumer. In fact, we’ve serviced the local clown population for a long time.

When was the last time you ‘went clowning around?’

As long as we can remember, clowns were part of history. It can be traced back to ancient Egypt where some poor soul, which was handicapped in some way, was made fun of. In old Greece, clowns first showed up in the theater. Court Jesters go back as far 2500 BC. During the Italian Renaissance, several clown characters were introduced to the public. In 1768 is the date understood to be when the first circus clown made his appearance, in England.

There are three types of clowns that you will probably recognize.

The first is the ‘White-Faced’ clown; their faces are white-based, usually dressed in very fancy clothing with a specific purpose in mind. They always seem to have a purpose, and you will never see them waving their arms out of control.

The next clowns are ‘Auguste’ clown, usually painted in red, white and black. They are silly, always falling around and getting knocked about by the white-faced clowns.

The third clown is the ‘Character’ clown, who is dressed in bold colors and wearing various disguises. Their characters usually distinguish what they’re like.

If you want to be a professional clown, you can head off to clown school. You can attend clown school on line, or the most famous clown school, Barnum and Bailey

Barnum and Bailey have a wonderful web site where you can take your young kids, take them to Barnum and Bailey and have them create their own circus. It is really a fun online game. You can train animals, create a name for your circus and develop circus acts for your show.

How about a birthday party for your child and yes, you get to dress up like a clown.

Not to worry we have everything that you will need. We have balloons for making those funny creatures or maybe a new clown wig. We also have an extensive line of clown makeup.

Maybe you’ve longed to be silly and funny without anyone guessing who you are. If so, clowning is for you. I remember when I was younger, and I used to go to the circus when it came to town. I always wanted to be a clown. I would laugh so hard at all the funny things they would do. It was great and it always made me happy. Sometimes we don’t get enough of that considerable fun as an adult.

Maybe you want to be a scary clown. They are just so darn frightening. Whenever I saw them on TV, I would never sleep at night.

I didn’t like the scary clowns when I was young, but we have them at The Costumer also.

Why is Duck Dynasty so popular? I really can’t tell you why, but I watched it the other night and now I’m a fan. I admit I loved it.

I thought the opening shots of the show were sort of a joke, and then I realized it wasn’t. The outfits were interesting—long beards and camouflage pants. The Robertson families are self-proclaimed ‘rednecks’ from Louisiana. With 8.6 million views watching the third season, they’ve shattered E viewing records. Have you checked out their Facebook page? They have over 4 million likes. They’re just a ‘down home’ family celebrating National Sweet Tea day. (Although I read that Uncle Si doesn’t drink sweet tea.)

The family that prays together stays together is one of the mottos for Duck Dynasty. They may call themselves red necks, but they certainly have made their place within our hearts. The public has acknowledged them with their wallets.

We’re not the only hearts they’ve captured. They have just completed a deal with Hallmark so if it’s a Duck Dynasty card you’re after for father’s day, it’s on the shelf. Your dad may be a fan, but I’m not sure if he wants his family to pick him up for dinner looking like the Robinsons. On the other hand, if he’s a fan, he just might love it if everyone shows up in camouflage and long beards.

Just to fill you in, the Dynasty is composed of the Duck Commander, Willie Robertson, his wife Korie; his parents, Phil and Miss Kay, his brothers Jase and Jep; and Phil’s brother, Uncle, Si.

They are endearing, very funny in a nice way and certainly far from stupid. These are a bunch of well-educated, smart business people that are playing it for all it’s worth. In many ways, they are role models, a family that has worked hard and made it. Phil Robertson started the business in an old shed where he made duck calls from Louisiana cedar trees. Willie is now the CEO of the company. The men are all bearded with amazingly lovely wives. That’s the part that really adds to the show. Where did they get those babes?

So how about a Duck Dynasty party? There seem to be kids who are asking their parents to have a Duck Dynasty Birthday Party. It is becoming very popular and we have supplied the hats and beards for them. How much fun would that be?

Let’s see, you can serve duck or have a crab boil and serve lots of down-home Louisiana food. You can go to their web site, check out the recipes. Go to the Duck Dynasty web site and buy some seasoning.

Who does the show appeal to? As you’ve guessed, it’s not only men. There are many women who seem to like this shaggy, bearded bunch. The rugged, outdoorsy look seems to be pretty popular. However, maybe they’re thinking about how the group looked before they go so ‘manly.’

The other day my friend showed me a flag that she was presented with when her father died. Apparently, he was in the Second World War. No one in my family was ever in active military duty, so I never had a very close remembrance on that level. As she told me about the flag, she became very emotional, “I thought I should do something with the flag to honor my dad, but I’m not sure what to do,” she said.

My first thought was to get a flag pole, hang the flag and have a ceremony in the back yard. As I researched the Internet, I came up with several prayers and ways to honor our military. Until we unfolded the flag, I didn’t realize how huge it was. It was too large to hang in the back yard; it needed to be hung from the New York State Library. The thought was there. I still read a wonderful poem that I found, and my friend felt honored. We decided we would have a 4th of July party, get dressed up and honor him again. Apparently, he was very outgoing, loved life and according to my friend would have loved having a party. It will be a fourth of July party.

All of my friends water skied on July 4th wearing skimmer hats and streamers hanging from our arms. Ah, for the good old days.

I suppose if we were to get dressed up now, we would wear red, white and blue wigs or have our hair dyed. The Costumer happens to have a Mohawk styled blue wig that would look great for water skiing. It’s actually a favorite.

Many businesses are open on the 4th. What can you do to make it a party day for your employees and your customers?

If your business is open on July 4th, how about having a 4th of July theme party for your store and your customers? You can decorate the outside with red, white and blue crepe paper and streamers, add plenty of stars and balloons, and you have a festive day. You can also serve colorful popsicles in the patriotic colors and have the local school band perform.

If you can’t find an entire band to perform in your parking lot, how about a drummer and a flute player? If you want to dress them up, The Costumer has plenty of patriotic costumes.

The Costumer is getting ready to release their new catalog! With over 60,000 costumes and 395 show plots, putting together a new catalog means lots of organizing and creative thought. But the team at The Costumer is up for the task; theater is in everyone's blood. In addition to costumes, the catalog contains wigs, mustaches, boots; makeup and everything that you need to complete the outfit. The costume is a big part of it but the accessories are what make it look authentic. Actually the catalog is just the beginning. The costumes must be fitted to the customer’s measurement, and be sent out in good condition and cleaned when the costume is returned. This takes a multitude of people with each one doing their specialized job. Everyone takes their particular job seriously.

This week there was a photo shoot at The Costumer for the new catalog. I was so excited that I would have an opportunity to see everyone in action. The shoot was organized by owner, Kathe Sheehan, who obviously knows her stuff. I loved to watch the costume changes and everyone running around like we were preparing for a Broadway Show.

Shooting a catalog is serious business for The Costumer. A list of the precise photographs must be made as well as well as lining up models for the shoot. Everything must be professionally shot and look great.

By the time I got to the shoot it was well under way. The models were lined up; and the dresses were being fitted. The models were enjoying their work. Even the littlest turtle models liked wearing their costumes.

The turtles, Jacklyn and Jordan are Kathe’s granddaughters. Can you imagine how cool it is to tell your friends that your grandmother owns a costume store?
If you’re planning an event and really want to have fun, consider adding costumes to the event; it makes it more fun and unforgettable. The Costumerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06388183721876899987noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022624674898905522.post-56645966235115087512013-05-28T11:00:00.000-04:002015-07-16T11:11:05.219-04:00“All Shook Up” with the Elvis Festival at Lake GeorgeIt’s here again, the Elvis Festival at Lake George with five days of fun and amazing talent. If you can't attend the entire five days at least get up for one of the days. If you’re an Elvis fan, you can’t miss this. There are six categories of competition for cash and prizes. Fans will vote for their favorite Elvis. The winner will be competing in Memphis, TN in August. If you haven’t been to “The King's” home in Memphis, this would be a grand time to visit. Every time I visit I’m marveled at how famous Elvis was and still is.

Elvis was known for his ‘gyrating hips.’ These hips were considered sinful and outrageous to the older generation but to his fans he was enduring. His appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on September 9, 1956 is said to have helped Elvis move toward the mainstream.

It is said that Ed Sullivan did not want Elvis on his show until he saw that Elvis brought in 60,000 viewers on the Steve Allen Show. Elvis was paid $50,000 for his appearance.

Elvis starred in 33 successful films and globally sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. He received 14 Grammy nominations with three wins, and was named "One of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Nation" for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. He honorably served his country in the United States Army.

Why is Elvis still so endearing? It’s been said that men wanted to be just like him, and women wanted him! He was hot even by today’s standards and described as being kind and compassionate as well as being extremely talented. Elvis is regarded as one of the most important figures of the 20th century.

This year Rolex has produced a video to honor the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. It features the history of Elvis' Rolex King Midas. Elvis wore the Limited-Edition Rolex King Midas which can be seen in several iconic photos and videos. It is currently being auctioned with starting bid at twenty-five thousand five hundred dollars.
Elvis was noted for his signature jumpsuits designed by costumer Bill Belew and his team. It’s rumored that he had over 245 jumpsuits with one being sold for two hundred fifty thousand dollars.

In Elvis's two 1970 Las Vegas engagements, the first one-piece gabardine outfits (jumpsuits) appeared. Decked out with high Napoleonic collars, Italian-style pointed sleeve cuffs and flared legs. See more at Elvis Presley's jumpsuit exhibit. Here are some last minute props for the Elvis Festival. You can go to The Costumer and check out Elvis’s gold costume.
A Costumer Wedding!Theresa Smith’s fiancé Arnie was a baseball fanatic. He actually was on three softball teams at one time. Theresa was wondering if she would ever be able to tear him away from the baseball diamond to get married.

Theresa started thinking; maybe they should get married on a baseball diamond? Suddenly, the thought turned into a vision—why not? It sounded like fun, but would anyone take it seriously?

The more they talked about it the more plausible it sounded. Where would they get married, how about the ball field? What first seemed like a silly idea was beginning to sound plausible. The food would be simple enough—they could serve hotdogs, beer and the regular baseball chow.

“I wasn’t sure about the details, says Theresa, but I realized it was a great idea. Instead of baseball fare, I could have a clambake with corn-on-the cob, baked potatoes, chicken and clams. This was beginning to sound like great fun.”

So Theresa discussed it with Arnie, and the baseball wedding was planned. The wedding would be held at the Scotia Glenville Elks Club. The club had three baseball fields, and a pavilion where they could hold the reception.

Of course, everyone would wear baseball uniforms, including those in the wedding party. Theresa wondered if the bridesmaids would like the idea. Much to Theresa’s surprise, everyone was in. The men were excited; they wouldn’t have to rent tuxedos, and the women thought it would be fun to dress as baseball players.

What would the bride wear? She would wear a traditional wedding dress and sit in the middle of the baseball diamond!

What gifts would the bridesmaids, and groomsmen get? Of course, they would get MVP trophies; because of their great ideas, the day would be a huge success.

Now that Theresa had the baseball theme decided it was time to get to work. The next problem was where she would get the ‘right’ baseball uniforms.

Theresa knew the local community theater used The Costumer so why not go there? Everyone at The Costumer was excited and loved the idea. They suggested Theresa rent the uniforms from the Damn Yankees plot with Washington Senator uniforms. Theresa thought it was great—she decided the ‘W’ would stand for ‘wedding party.’

What kind of music would they play for the wedding? Of course, the theme would be “Take me out to the Ball Game.” Theresa started looking for an organ but eventually came up with an accordion player who was happy to accommodate.

According to Theresa, “The best thing about the wedding was having her friends participate in the planning. Everyone was excited and loved pitching in. Those who spent many a “happy hour” planning the wedding were Arnie’s Cousin John, Theresa’s Sister Amy and girlfriend Sue.”

Planning a wedding is work, a major expense and serious business. What makes it easier is having friends who are happy to help and in this case-The Costumer. The Costumer turned out to be much more fun than a bridal shop and everyone loved the baseball theme.

If you’re considering a theme wedding why not stop at The Costumer? The Costumer has ‘plot plans,’ which provide 60,000 plus theatrical costumes and 390 different shows available for rental. The plot plans will give you an idea of what to wear, how to decorate and what to serve; it's bound to be a wedding you and your guests will never forget.
Our hope at The Costumer is that Theresa and Arnie decide to renew their vows with us. What a good reason for a party.

When a big-name reality celebrity endorses a product, you know it's going to be hot! Especially when the celebrity is Kim Kardashian.

“Ever wonder how Kim gets that gorgeous contour on her cheekbones? “To contour, the secret to doing it so it’s not in-your-face is to use a darker foundation. I use professional makeup concealer, which has a heavier consistency, and I apply it with a brush and blend it with a sponge. Then I set it with translucent powder,” says Joyce Bonelli; Kim's make up artist. (Instantly Ben Nye's Luxury Powder, specifically the color Banana, was being used by dozens of popular YouTube makeup artists. These videos have translated into millions of views and millions more in sales across the country. The public wants what celebrities have, and we have been selling up to two dozen a week!

It’s interesting how a celebrity can try a makeup, tweet about it, and then it becomes so popular. YouTube and celebrity tweets can change business for a lot of people.

In the past few months, we have sold so many different shades of Ben Nye powders. We not only have powder. We sell a huge line of Ben Nye theatrical makeup for shows. Our customers include theater students, clowns, and people who use Ben Nye for everyday use. Many of us use the Ben Nye mascara every day, and love it. It gives fabulous lashes that don't clump. The eyeliners are great because they come in a variety of colors.

The banana powder has been the most popular makeup product sold this spring since it went viral, we have sold massive amounts along with many other shades, including sienna and topaz. Ben Nye has a wonderful line and The Costumer has had much success in selling it for theatrical purposes for all kinds of high school theatre shows. You must come in and try it; the foundation gives considerable coverage.

“Word of mouth” not only has made a comeback, but it’s now “world of mouth.” . Now instead of just telling your friends in person about some new cool thing you’ve discovered, you can tell all of your friends all at the same time. Once it goes viral, who knows whose listening.

I’ve lost count of the number of times a customer has told me “My friend just told me about your store; I had no idea you carried makeup." It’s exciting when someone visits the store for the first time, they realize we are not only a costume store.

We are the only store in the Capital Region that you can walk in and purchase Ben Nye makeup supplies. You can come in and sample the makeup and get exactly the shade you need. Is banana powder the right color for you? Come in and we will help you figure it out.

It's no wonder there has been an instant success with Ben Nye's luxury powders. The subtle shimmer in the translucent powders adds a nice "glow" to any skin tone. This year Ben Nye has expanded and improved their fashion makeup, and I'm glad to see it becoming so main stream. It's not just for theater anymore. Other new products include Sheer Matte foundation and more lipstick and cheek colors.

The Costumer has been a leader in the theater industry for over 96 years, but we don't just do theater. As our vendors expand beyond theater, and social media continues to recognize new products, we are expanding too!

We're more than just costumes; come see us for "The Fun of It!" Want to try the new luxury powders? Click here: The Costumer "Superstore", 19995 Central Avenue, Albany,New York 12205The Costumerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06388183721876899987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7022624674898905522.post-28822853866511377742013-05-10T10:49:00.000-04:002015-07-16T10:51:09.692-04:00The Littlest Ballerina At The Costumer

I received a call from my friend Kim about her daughter Mahogany. Her daughter needed a costume for an upcoming dance event.

Where would we go for the costume? Of course we would go to my friends at the The Costumer in Albany, New York.

It seems that Mahogany is getting ready to dance at Mallozzi’s in Saratoga for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was dancing to the song, “Good Morning Heartache.”

Apparently, Alpha Omega gives scholarships to people in the arts. Could it be that Mahogany will win one? In any event, Mahogany needs to look good.

Mahogany Akita is no ordinary 13-year-old. Mahogany has been performing with the Saratoga City Ballet for the past three years. She has performed in the New York City Ballets of "Circus Polka" and the “Magic Flute.”

Akita trains at the Saratoga City Ballet and has danced with the Saratoga Children’s Theater and the Flying Kite’s Children’s Theater. She loves to perform, and hopes that ballet will be her career. Everyone who’s worked with Mahogany marvels at her natural ability paired with her hard work and dedication. Mahogany admits that ballet is fun but not easy to learn.

Mahogany works hard with everything. She attends the Waldorf School and has managed to be a straight ‘A’ student.

According to her mom, Kim Lisinicchia, Mahogany is a natural performer. Mahogany became interested in ballet when the doctor told her she was built like a dancer. Once Mahogany heard this, she was off to ballet school, and she’s been taking lessons and dancing ever since.

Back to Mahogany’s costume. Mahogany decides with Debbie, our customer service expert, to wear a flapper outfit complete with a headdress and fishnet stockings. Here she is in her bright flapper dress; she looks magnificent.

While at The Costumer, Mahogany decides to get her ballet slippers. The Costumer has ballet slippers as well as tap and jazz shoes. They also have dancewear and accessories for youth and adults. You will find well-known brands such as Sansha, Mirella, Bodywrappers and Capezio.

If you think, dancewear is hard to find, you need to head up to The Costumer to check out their selection.

You'll find dancewear and dance accessories for men or women, adults or youth and for individuals or dance groups. From hip hop dance wear to Latin, tap to gymnastics and belly dancing, you can get them all at The Costumer. If you’re looking for a gift for your ballerina, The Costumer has dance bags and sterling silver charms.

Leg warmers are back in style. The Costumer has leg warmers in solids and stripes for both children and adults. We know summer is here but there will still be plenty of cold nights in the northeast. Why not look while they have a large supply? Leg warmers are great gifts for those little and big ballerinas.

Will you need a fancy dress or shoes for your debut on Dancing with the Stars? If you do, The Costumer has those for you also.

How about having a dance party for the little ones? Children love to move and imitate animals. How about having the kids dress up in animal costumes? 'Follow the leader' is a very popular game for kids—this time the leader and the kids can be dressed up in their favorite animals.

This is a great way to have fun and teach children about different kinds of animals and the sounds and movements the animals make. The children can show off their favorite pet and their talent.

The Costumer has all types of animal costumes from the usual dog and cats to cows and my personal favorite, the crocodile hat. There is also cat and animal makeup to complete the outfit.

Of course with costumes!

May 5th is around the corner; time for another celebration with good food and a party atmosphere.

Even if you don’t feel connected to Cinco de Mayo, you can still hold a celebration.

Cinco de Mayo is considered a more widespread holiday than just a Mexican one. The Battle of Puebla took place on May 5, 1862 near the city of Puebla during the French intervention in Mexico. Although the Mexican Army was eventually defeated, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. With this victory, Mexico demonstrated to the world that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves against any foreign intervention.

The people of American descent living in the United States celebrate by having mariachi music and parades.

Here are some ideas for a great party:

Decide where you’re going to hold your celebration. The weather may be warm enough to hold it outside or at your favorite Mexican restaurant. Where you hold the event will determine how many people you can invite and how to decorate. This year May 5th is on a Sunday; you can choose when you want to have the party.

Get the invitations out now so people have time to get their costumes, and you have time to get the right decorations and the food. Make sure you let everyone know the theme of the party, and that you would like them to come in traditional dress. You may want to put an invitation on Facebook.

Call The Costumer! The Costumer has a full line of clothing for this event from simple hats to magnificent dresses. Wearing Mexican inspired clothing and hats will make your party more authentic and fun. We have everything, bullet belts, lace fans, Mexican Zapata sombreros. If you need more ideas, just call us. (Don’t forget the make-up.)

The ones above: the masked bandit, Spanish beauty and delux Spanish man.

How about a matador hat?

Most of us like to dress up but don't know what to wear. That's why Halloween is such a memorable holiday-anything goes. By the way, Halloween is just around the corner.

Get a game. How about an inflatable cactus cooler and ring toss game? Games are always fun-this game is available at The Costumer.

What should you serve to eat? There are lots of possibilities such as nachos, chips, salsa and hot melted cheese for dipping. You can set up a buffet or taco bar so your guests can create their own tacos— seasoned chicken, beef, fish, guacamole, lettuce, cheese, onions, tomatoes and sour cream. Don’t forget the avocados and plenty of napkins.

My personal favorite is Emeril Lagasse's pico de gallo; the hotter the better. (By the way, I’ve given you a link to great recipes.) Not only is the food good, but it’s good for you.

What about dessert? Dessert choices could include classics such as flan, sopapillos, and a simple quick bread. If you want to get fancy, rents a chocolate fountain.

How to decorate? Some special touches would be a chili pepper wreath hanging over the door and a personalized fiesta banner outside your door.

Flamenco dancers? How about a male or female flamenco dancer at your front door? Put an ad on Craig's list for a dancer.

Lights and balloons? You’ll need margarita lights with red, black, orange and green balloons hung around the room. They will look great over the buffet, the bar, and around doorways.

What’s a party like without Margaritas? If you want alcoholic beverages, how about serving a triple platinum margarita direct from the Hard-Rock Café? If you're serving straight shots of tequila, make sure you have plenty of sliced lemons, limes and salt shakers. For a non-alcoholic drink look for Mexican soda flavors such as watermelon and mango at a market specializing in Spanish food. (Al the Margaritas will be just as good without liquor.)

Don’t forget a piñata. A piñata is a paper-mâché container filled with candy and hung from the ceiling. The piñata is hit by blindfolded people until the candy falls out! This will definitely make the party interesting.

Gather and organize a play list of music to use during the celebration. Incorporate some current Mexican songs into your play list and have your music collection ready to go before the celebration begins. Your guests will love it if the music meets them at the door.

Could you find some strolling musicians?

Take lots of photos for your Facebook page. With everyone dressed in costume, the photos will be memorable.

What will make your party a success? A successful party usually has beautiful and imaginative decorations, great music and food and of course, wonderful friends.

Don’t forget the colors of the Mexican flag to continue your theme, red, green and white.

Halloween isn’t the only holiday to wear a costume and a mask. So why wait until Halloween to get dressed up and have some fun?

Have you wondered about the origin of Halloween? It’s been said that people wore costumes and wigs on Halloween on the eve of all Saints Day, November first. They went from door-to-door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for treats. It was often referred to as ‘mummying.’ People got dressed up, sang and engaged in silliness.

There as an ancient belief, that the devil participated in all masquerades and wearing a mask was a way to protect oneself from the devil.

It’s challenging to get adults to get dressed up in costumes and masks; the best thing to do is have a theme.

How do you develop a costume theme?

Having hosted many parties, simple themes are the best. When you ask them to dress up; people somehow seem intimidated or just don’t want to. I always tell people they can’t come into the party unless they have a costume but that never seems to work. You just have to find ways to get them excited about dressing up for your party. I suggest you give out prizes for the funniest, silliest, unique and craziest costumes. It will help.

Here are some ideas to help get your friends in the ‘mood.’

Warm weather is coming so it’s a great time to have a costume party. In the spring, you won't have to wear cumbersome coats and or boots to wear over your costumes.

Everyone will get to walk down the street in their costumes. One of my friends dressed as a banana for Halloween and said he never had so much fun or attention from walking down the street. People took pictures of him in his banana costume, and he was the hit of Facebook. Don't forget to post all of your photos.

Here's a simple and easy way to get your friends to dress up. Ask them to dress up in a costume using the first letter of their name.

Let's say your name is Clark. By the way, it's a great name for 'costuming.' You can be Clark Kent and superman or Clark Gable and dress as Rhett Butler from 'Gone with the Wind.’ (Let's not forget Scarlet O'Hara if your name begins with an S.)

Any of these are sure to get you a lot of attention. If you decide to use this theme, then you better be very clear in your invitation so people understand what you mean. When put to the test, I’ve found that people are quite clever.

I would love to dress up as Lizbeth Scott in her 1957 film with Elvis Presley.”Loving You.” I could even go back a few years and get myself an elegant dress with a flouncy bottom, something out of the 1920s. You know one with lots of gauze and silk. I saw a couple of those at the academy awards! I could suggest my date come as Elvis himself.

Speaking of Elvis, how about having an Elvis party to coincide with the Elvis Fest in Lake George, New York, May 29-June 2, 2013? The Costumer has Elvis's costumes and various other Elvis paraphernalia. If you’re an Elvis fan, this would definitely be the weekend to celebrate. There is nothing as cool as a room full of Elvis’s of various ages. How about Elvis karaoke?

Imagine a party with all those swaying hips?

How about a kid's birthday party where everyone wears a costume. The Costumer has plenty of fairy and super hero outfits and how about this bee costume? I would give prizes for the most interesting, original and fun costume. Be sure to take lots of photos; the parents will have as much fun as the kids.

My personal favorite is an old-fashioned Mother’s Day. We used to dress up in our 1920’s flapper dresses and wear them into our retail stores. ( My mom was a flapper.)

We took my mom out for dinner, had her picked up in a horse-drawn carriage and everyone dressed up. (When you live in the country, it’s not so hard to get a horse and carriage.) Of course, mom wore a tiara. As much as she said she was embarrassed, she loved it.

Dad was more into props. When he drove the water ski boat, he had a manikin in the seat next to him. He also kept a manikin in the passenger seat of his truck! Yes, he changed the manikin's clothes weekly.

The key is to have fun—wearing a costume and mask is always fun. You just may have to help your friends get creative.

Why not get ‘costumed up, just for the fun of it? I’m going to call a friend and ask him to help me with an ‘Elvis’ night. Stay tuned to see how he does it. I just talked with him and he’s on the case.

Why not, like I said, just for the fun of it.
Check out The Costumer

What are you wearing to your prom? If you hadn’t noticed, prom season is right around the corner.

I’m thinking of my dreaded prom, it wasn’t that much fun. My mother wouldn’t buy me the dress I wanted—the sophisticated white one with the embroidered red roses. She made me get the pink one that made me look like some old lady’s tablecloth.

I didn’t like my date, I had braces on my teeth and I didn’t really want to go. Sounds like a recipe for disaster right? I think it was.

Can you imagine if I had enough guts to get my friends to dress up like we were in a Broadway show? We might have even been able to put on a little skit at the prom. I bet everyone would have enjoyed that. I always loved wearing a costume and it seemed like I had to wait until Halloween to get dressed up.

Not anymore, why not start a new trend and wear whatever you want. The pictures will look a lot better on Facebook. They might even make YouTube if you decide to do the Harlem Shake.

Consider skipping the fancy, overpriced dress that you’re never going to wear again and opt for something really hilarious. Change the game, maybe you can decide to honor the most unusual and creative king and queen? Decide what you think will be cool, rent it and return it.

Prom night is supposed to be a night that you won’t forget, right? So what’s so much fun about spending a lot of money for an outfit that you’ll probably never wear again? If your mom is like mine was, you won’t get the right dress anyway. I hated those matching shoes, you know, the ones they dye. I notice they still do that.

Make prom night a hilarious evening, one you and your classmates will never forget.

Okay so what’s out there for you? You can check out The Costumer for some period prom dresses or silly garb—maybe it’s just a crazy wig or prosthesis. The Costumer has Ben Nye makeup, take it from me it will cover anything. If you’re not sure how to use the makeup, we have books for that. The Costumer has everything you could ever need or want to give you the perfect look. They’ve got gowns, accessories, wigs and animal costumes. You don’t have to wait until Halloween to get dressed in your favorite fantasy or wear something very cool.

Come in and we’ll help you choose something to wear and guide you to the right makeup. I guarantee it’s more fun than going to the Mac counter at Macy’s.

What would be funnier than the prom king wearing a hot dog hat or suit standing next to ketchup and mustard? Or maybe you just want some crazy teeth.

Okay there will be lots of folks in those long gowns and their corsages. But after a couple of hours of dancing, eating and feeling uncomfortable everyone will be wishing they could change their clothes. They'll wish they were wearing your hot dog suit.

Besides, you will get to be the center of attention and the photos will be the best part.

When you look back at your photos at your 20th year reunion you will have plenty to reminisce and laugh about.

It will be a lot more fun than wondering if you can still fit into that prom dress.
What you can find at The CostumerEaster is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. While it is a Christian holiday, it has roots in both Pagan and Hebrew traditions celebrating the Vernal Equinox and the arrival of spring. The Costumer has a full supply of fun items for your church’s Easter pageant to your personal Easter Party. Fill out our plot plan and check out the Easter party. The Costumer's generic Easter plot includes biblical costumes from the era of Roman prefect Pontius Pilatus.

Every party needs an Easter bunny or a fancy chicken. Or maybe it needs something different?

Easter is March 31st, but on April 1, 2013, the 135th annual White House Easter Egg Roll will be held with a new theme. This year the theme will be “Be healthy, be active, and be you” First dog 'Bo' will be staring in the Easter Egg Hunt. They are inviting followers on Twitter and Facebook ages 5-13 to join the fun on the South Lawn and of course let everyone know from their experience.

Are you thinking of having an Easter egg hunt? Everyone loves a ‘hunt’ no matter what it is.

I never realized how many calories the Easter candy had. Those Peeps looked harmless to me.

I think for you and me; we should skip the Peeps. You don’t need many of the Peeps to knock your diet out for weeks. Although they are fat free, they’re loaded with sugar. About a row of four bunnies and you’re at 130 calories 8 grams of sugars, which means 32 grams in a serving of four.

You’re better off with those jelly beans. Each bean is about 6 calories—35 bean serving is about 140 calories and 37 grams of sugar. If you eat too many, it will mean a lot of gym time.

Let’s not forget the Cadbury Cream Egg with 170 calories each.

If you’re planning on overindulging, maybe you should do it while attending a spin class. I just found out the seven ounce hollow chocolate bunny has 1,250 calories. How depressing! I’m not going to look any further.

How about filling the Easter baskets with some things that might be healthy and long term will make everyone happy?

Summer is coming. Who wouldn’t love a new pair of flip-flops painted in a bright color? Bubbles are fun; add some jump ropes, lip balm, sunscreen, balls, stickers and coloring books. Water guns can be fun as long as the weather is good.

If you want to keep the healthy thing going, how about making a carrot cake, there are lots of low-calorie recipes and why not add some zucchini to increase the roughage? You can create your own low calorie chocolate candy with dark cocoa, a little butter and honey. Next add dry fruit and nuts and you’ll have an amazing treat.

Want to play? How about Hula Hoops for everyone, including the adults? We don't have the hoops for you but buy some and add them to our Hula Party CD? With lots of great moves, you're bound to keep down the chocolate bunny calories.

Hooping is a high-quality work out which will improve core strengths, tone your stomach and let's not forget your butt. This high energy workout burns about 400-600 an hour. It's right up there with Zumba.

Hooping can also improve your balance and posture and make you more coordinated. It might even bring back some great memories.

The hoop is also considered the ancient symbol for gnosis, (knowledge with wisdom). It is the perfect symbol of infiniture, the snake that eats its own tail, the cycle of death and rebirth, and the change within the whole.

Costumes always make a party more fun; get to us early and get your favorite Easter outfit or Hula CD.

Have some fun, make the party different; just get moving. Chad and Tina’s perpetual party is ever ongoing. Since their Thanksgiving and fall harvest parties in November 2012, until today, there hasn’t been a single day that they haven’t been in a festive mood. Granted, living at The Costumer 1995 Central Ave in Colonie, has afforded them many opportunities and also given them many opportunities that they can afford.

Tina is wowed by their amazing selection and courteous, knowledgeable staff, while Chad is happy that their reasonable prices for rental costumes and sales items won’t break the bank.

Right now, Chad is prepping for a children’s Easter party and an adult spring fling, while Tina spins the wheel of fortune, hoping that good fortune will come to those fortunate enough to visit them at The Costumer.

They enjoy life and find reason to celebrate everyday.
